Quickly Noted: Disaster Timelines

April 8, 2010

Claire Rubin emailed me last night to let me know about a service she’s involved with that builds disaster timelines. As a huge fan of Edward Tufte, I found this idea to be supremely interesting and wanted be sure to pass it along to you all, if for no reason other than one of her products is relevant to an ongoing disaster.

With the Big Branch South Mine disaster in the news daily, Ms. Rubin wanted to pass along this very interesting timeline of mine history (PDF) (punctuated, unfortunately, by all too many disasters). Developed for the 100-year anniversary of mining research conducted by NIOSH, it is insanely detailed. NIOSH has also published a PDF version of their history, which I imagine is as detailed (considering it stretches to more than 100 pages).

Enjoy!
